    Hmmm....it is Tuesday isn't it? :)

Cool my long wait is over. Nice with the bump in ram and FW800 (yes!). :)

Bummer that theres no 7200rpm HD on 15" and gosh darn it getting hit again with the lame video cards.

Oh, well you never get everything...I'll be ordering a 15" soon. Hopefully it wont be a lap burner.

Am very happy with the RAM but OMG, is it expensive (590 in Belgium)

Bought it anyways. Would like to find out if I swap that second dimm out for a 2GB, would it run at 4GB of RAM? Any takers?

Seriously? An apple rumors forum is no place fo a shareholder? That's absurd.

"As you can see 260K people bought HTC Thunderbolt since Verizon started selling them (about a month). This translates to about 3 million phones annually. Clearly the demand is there. Also, you keep forgetting that other phones have swappable batteries."

If you want to play numbers, the iPhone on Verizon (same carrier as thunderbolt) sold 2.2 million in two months, compared to a quarter million in one month for tbolt. Saying that equals 3million annually 1) makes it compete better with the iPhone over two months on a single carrier and 2) assumes that the numbers remain constant. Being that people are figuring out that the battery life is dreadful (and you forget that the majority of the market doesn't want to swap batteries like it's 1999) and that android phones have a short cycle of being the hottest new thing, I don't think there's a basis to assume consistent sales in line with their opening month. Numbers can say anything when there's no common sense behind it.

Correction: 260000 HTC Thunderbolts in 2 weeks.

His character on "Two & A Half Men" is based loosely on his life. He's been this way for the longest time. He's been through enough rehab to know what the alternatives are (the "healthy" lifestyle), and he obviously doesn't want that. He enjoys living as he does, so who can begrudge him that?

I'd rather have a short, enjoyable and colourful life than a long, boring one. Cheers to Charlie, I say. Damn that guys pulls some nice chicks

We need an upvoting system like Reddit. Here's a +1 for you.

Who the hell are we to judge?

Who said we have to live til 105 years old?

I have met crazier "normal" people who weren't even on drugs!

Goes against Steve Jobs saying Lion was shipping this summer. What is your source ?

Until Apple says it's delayed, I'll believe Apple when they say it ships this summer.

OK, here is a historic example:
"Apple missed Leopard's release time frame as originally announced by Apples CEO Steve Jobs. When first discussed in June Jobs had stated that Apple intended to release Leopard at the end of 2006 or early 2007. A year later, this was amended to Spring 2007; however on 12 April Apple issued a statement that its release would be delayed until October 2007 because of the development of the iPhone."
    (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Leopard)

I do not believe that Adobe, Microsoft and other big companies need just a few months to make their apps Lion-compatible. Will Apple release Lion, if major companies do not support it? Unlikely. Q1 2012 is more likely.

    Hey guys,

I might be a bit off topic here, but im gonna risk it anyways...

I am a VS2005 c# developer (Compact Framework) and in the process of switching to Mac.

I am currently working exclusivly on a Dell PC, and toying with the idea of throwing away that ugly piece of plastic, and getting a shiny new mac book pro.

Now here is the thing : how do i keep the great performance i currently have on my Dell ? (bootcamp is out of the question since I do not want to keep booting my machine to check emails etc...)

Will VMWare cut it ? I head some discussion on the poor performace Parallels has when it comes to disk access (compiling is disk intensive).

Any thoughts ? did any one here try it ?

People, the single worst thing that the Mac community faces in the area of security is upon us right now...

Little security experts who cry exploit.

Thanks to the media jumping at anything that looks like it could be a security problem with Mac OS X, we now have security experts who are willing to make half-baked claims to draw attention to themselves. But even more frightening is the fact that the Mac community isn't a target because it is a good target or an easy target... no, we are a target because it is the most notable target these days.

So, how do we fix this?

    Frankly, I don't know.

    ...........<text omitted>............

The only thing I can suggest (which I doubt anyone will follow) is to avoid the hysteria. When a real threat emerges, you'll most likely hear about it long before you are actually in any danger from it.

I am with you 100%. Every time one of these 'expert reports' comes out, I see a plethora of panic posts following it. The common theme is; 'we're screwed, someone save us, why doesn't Apple do something!

I think the majority of the security reports are motivated by ego, or most likely, profit. When companies like Network Associates funds a security vulnerability study, it is not done because they are a concerned, benevolent member of the technical community. They are out to make a buck. What they promote is fear. What they sell is reassurance. Nice gig.

Remote access with iPad to a Mac works fantastic with a number of programs / utilities... Just Do it :)

Agreed! I use LogMeIn Ignition paired with a Bluetooth mouse and it works quite well. So much so that I'll be replacing my 2009 MBP with a new iMac when they are released next week.

I have had several friends and family members try Android with several different models, trying so hard to believe it was better then iOS iP4, but finally giving in and now love their iP4s! They all have iPads as well!

A friend in IT was all over his new EVO, saying and trying to show how superior it was to his old iPhone. Within a month or two the EVO was gone, replaced with an iPhone4. Why? He said it was a dead end. While a few things were really nice, it was buggy, there were too few apps, and it was just no fun to use.
Life should be fun, not fraught with glitches and a tool that had no soul.

I'd kill if the next iPhone could do LTE. The Thunderbolt is great @ speeds, the battery problem is remedied by the extended battery. The bigger problem (for me) is the Android OS. After using Apple's OS, Android looks like a big freakin' mess.

Two Thunderbolt ports on the 27".

You now get a 2TB drive and 256GB SSD for what the old 1TB+SSD combo. cost, although it would have been nice to see cheaper/more options here.

Now, when they're talking of a replacement, are they thinking of killing Charlie's character off and Rob Lowe (or whomever) would be some new character that comes out of nowhere, it would they keep Charlie's character, swap actors, and act as if nothing happened?

I think Rob could pull-off the sardonic character very well, but they will probably go with a name change just the same.

Good thing that Apple takes parental controls as seriously as they take porn in their Disney store... Oh, wait. They don't.

Oh wait, they DO, and have for years:

    http://www.demogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/img-0059.png

Problem solved. Apple DOES have this additional barrier that parents can use to stop accidental or unwanted purchases by children. In this case, the parents didn’t know about that option (they put in their credit card and gave their kid an Internet device without looking at Apple’s online materials enough to see that Parental Controls even existed). A simple mistake which I can understand them making—and one Apple did not make them pay for :)

Those restrictions, if you choose to enable them, are locked by a 4-digit code (separate from your lock code).

    1. Professional conferences cost that much.
    2. Apple sends 1000 of their engineers that you can talk with. Who is Google sending? How accessible are they?
    3. WWDC is more days.

Number 2 above is one of the reasons that it would be difficult to move to a larger venue. It might accommodate more people, but the real value is getting to talk with Apple engineers and ask questions. If they made the venue larger, your chances of getting to talk with them becomes slim. It's a tough problem to solve.

It is Apple. Number 2 is not the reason. Chances are moving it to another venue would cost more money which means less profit.
Google is more than likely just trying to cover cost. Apple is going to try to make a profit.

No demand for another smart TV.

Instead Apple TV needs more features:

    - access to more web content
    - more integration with macs and iDevices
    - DVR that's iDevice compatible without transcoding
    - gaming

I do not have a practical answer for you, but I had a similar question when I was upgrading the HD in my powerbook - I wanted the fastest drive I could afford as this would give my PB the biggest performance boost. What I found out is that the 160GB 5400 perpendicular drives have about 90-95% the performance throughput of a non-perpendicular 7200 drive. The reason being that because the bit are perpendicular, the drive needs to rotate a shorter amount to read the same amount of data. I know at the microscopic size of the data on the drives this seems hard to believe, but logically, it makes sense to me. My PB is a screamer by comparison to the 4200 drive that was in there, which has not bearing to your question of course...

I suspect, that the 5400 160GB drive from Apple will have decent performance. Personally, I'm not impressed with the 4200 200GB offering, but for someone who needs more space and ultimate performance is not key, then this would be fine.

That all being said, I look forward to finding out the specs & models of the actual drives Apple is putting in the new MBP's before I'd put money down on one.

    Cheers!

thanks for the info! sounds like the 5400 160gb drive is the one for me... :)

To be honest, I've had more application crashes and restarts on OSX than I have under XP/Windows in the past 3 years. So much for "crash resistant" - and yes, I've had 4 kernel panics since I got this iMac home; that's more than the number of BSODs I've had under XP in 4 years.

Which means -- as everyone is saying -- that there is something wrong with your computer. I have a MacBook, two Intel iMacs, and a Mac Pro in my house, and they do not crash despite heavy daily use. My poor Mac Pro is running three different operating systems right now using Parallels, with nary a complaint. If you are getting unexplained kernel panics on a clean install of Mac OS X, then you have a hardware problem.

Hardware problems can affect any OS -- I've seen Windows systems that get daily BSODs. It's not because "Windows sucks", it's because there was a sub-par memory chip or somesuch in the system. Likewise Mac OS X crashes, when nobody else is experiencing a problem, are not an indication of the stability of the OS but rather of your hardware.

You're quoting me back to me when all of us (including me) were talking about that other guy that is having hardware problems because his Parallels "sucks." Parallels kicks ass on my C2D 20" iMac - hence the reason I piped up to be the first to say something is wrong with the other guy's machine if he can't get it working right.

On mine, which is stock hardware except for the 2GB of RAM I have in it, Parallels starts up in 4 seconds, boots my XP VM in 9-10, shuts down in 3-4, restarts the same VM in under 5 seconds (have yet to figure that one out, probably because of caching someplace; I don't even see the XP splash screen when it reboots/restarts because it's so fast), suspends in 22-25 seconds, resumes in 30-34, and I have no issues with any hardware at all in my XP VM. I even burn CDs and DVDs from the XP VM over FireWire/USB without hassles (Plextor FireWire/USB external).

So, on a similarly configured piece of hardware, if he's having suspend/resume times that seem to be 4-6x longer than others then, as you said, there is something wrong with the hardware. If none of the rest of us are having said issues, your line of logic would follow and apply to his machine since he's the only one reporting such ridiculously long suspend/resume times among other things.

Parallels works for me. Since I can't post specific benchmark data for Parallels and that other new-on-the-scene virtualization software for Macs <hint, hint> I'll just say this:

I completed the testing I said I was going to do, and Parallels simply lays the smackdown across that other software. And yes I'm well aware that other software is in beta - or pre-beta late alpha as one person put it - and that's fine. But I paid for Parallels, and to use that most famous line about Macs:

    It just works.

Oh yeah, it beats that other software even with multi-core CPU support enabled. Go figure.

    bb

Parallels sucks but until now its been the only REAL game in town.

Ah... the clarion call of lamers. Might as well bash Windows since it's so pervasive while you're at it. And it's still no excuse for stealing the software and breaking the faith. Bleh...
