If the US signs the United Nations Convention Against Torture, and then admits using "enhanced interrogation" methods as part of its policy in the "War on Terror", then there is a double standard. We are either advocates of torture, or we are not.
Until advocates of "enhanced interrogation" grow a pair and start calling it torture, which is what it is, there is no point in even having a discussion on the subject.
Ok, I'll go first. E.I. = torture, and where is the line to hook electrodes up to KSM's balls?

One of the tings I saw last year was that they are going to make their new cars feel more like what Americans are used to driving.
Go test drive a Camry/Malibu/Accord to find out what that feels like. :o
And that is a shame - since one of the few joys I had with my POC '99 New Beetle was how fun it was to drive. So much for fahrvergngen - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrvergngen
I have to admit I always thought the Fahrvergngen thing was a bit silly, but it did position the VWs as "different", something the new Jetta and Passat are emphatically not. They are intentionally more the same.

I think the real reason he's leaving is that he is frustrated that Apple doesn't care about computers anymore
He's going back into Science, away from commercial products all together. A land where computers are tools, and the knowledge he brings from working on the OS will be used to make better computer models of complex ideas.
Maybe, just maybe, he was asked to join a really cool amazing research team.
If this has been a two year transition then it's probably not due to any unhappiness with Apple or direction. If it was the transition would have been weeks not years.

Okay! Okay.
I understand that you don't particularly feel like buying a pre-licked router.
So now only $10 shipped! That's a hell of a deal!

Here is the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Gay-rights-group-complains-as-Kobe-is-caught-usi?urn=nba-wp1277
It seems Kobe used to word "******" at a ref. Honestly it seems the "gay community" takes things way out of proportion and needs to relax a little, even if he is a celebrity the gay community needs to chill.
We (the general public) are tightening up the "gay slur" leash a little to tight. I know I use the word ****** or thats gay when I do things, even if I look at a pink motorcycle I'm like that's gay. It has nothing to do with gays in general, so why flip out over it?

Except that the question "male to male sex" is discriminatory. It doesn't ask you "received anal sex", it asks you about your sexual orientation. Plain and simple, discriminatory and non-scientific because male-to-female sex has the exact same risks.
Has the exact same risks on an individual basis. But statistically, gay males have a higher-than-average ratio of HIV. Not sure about other STDs, but I would guess it's the same as HIV. Not passing judgment here, just pointing out that as a whole, gay males have a higher rate of HIV.
Disclaimer (or flame suit): I don't care about gay marriage one way or the other. In fact, I wish the government would stay out of ALL marriage, gay or straight. Apart from identifying domestic partnerships for tax purposes (something any two adults should be able to enter into), the government has no business establishing marriage definitions. Your church may vary, and you may choose to believe whatever you wish, but our tax dollars should be used more effectively, than to ban two gay dudes from getting married. Stay out of my business, and I will stay out of yours. Promise.
Rant over! :)

Good God Edesign you caught that Napster double post in less than a minute.
Luck of the draw. Just got back from getting lunch, hit "New Posts" and it was sitting there. With more of us around things *should* get caught quicker.

apple says no, and i can confirm this on my new 2nd gen shuffle. there is a slight gap.Can you be more specific? What do you mean by the word "slight"? Old iPods have a 1-2- second gap between tracks. Is it less than a second?
Have you tested with a many multi-track classical album or electronica compilation?

The India remark is not a bash against Indians, it is a bash against overseas outsourcing, and to some extent insourcing.
India does not have the worker protections, laws, etc. that the US has. The country is basically a sweat shop, and Indian consulting firms, desperate for American business, will routinely lie, overestimate their ability to complete a project, and then treat their workers like crap. The result is the project rarely gets done correctly. This is from 15 years IT experience -I have seen it many, many times.
Microsoft routinely ships development projects to India in order to tap into low-wage labor and avoid US laws. Apple probably does some of this as well, although MS is notorious for it. The quality of MS products has gone down, perhaps as a result of this (among many other factors).
Cloud computing may ultimately mean that a H1B comes into your company, drops a couple circuits in, and everything runs from India: no need to hire American workers. The office is "virtualized." When the Indian workers become expensive, the Indian firms just ship those jobs over to China.
10 years from now, the IT industry in the US may have gone the way of the textile industry, with basically everyone losing their jobs. I hope that doesn't happen, because I like working in this industry, and my kid likes computers ...
---
As far as MS being the best corporate infrastructure, give me a break. Microsoft ripped off Novell to get Active Directory (which isn't even as good -it lacks fault tolerance and the performance is poor), and before that ripped off Apple to get the GUI. Windows 7 looks like a cheap OSX knock-off made in mainland China. MS steals ideas, Apple is the innovator.
As I said before, MS makes good front-end applications, and a few good back-end ones as well (SQL is good but very, very expensive -Exchange is a piece of shi*). Their OS still runs on old technology and it shows.
GPOs can do ten million things, 95% of which corporations never use -that is called feature creep.

Volkswagen has taken a new direction with the design of their Passat.
Whereas most automakers are putting more thought into bringing more and better small cars to the market these days, Volkswagen is making their new Passat bigger and a lot cheaper. (http://jalopnik.com/5729079/the-2011-volkswagen-passat-less-wagen-more-volk)
The engine choices remain good, especially the rare diesel option, but how are they going to shave $7000 off the base price of the Passat AND make it larger without turning it into just another Camry/Malibu/Taurus/Impala/Accord soulless bore-fest McSedan?
Volkswagen's following in the US is built on buyers looking for a more European-flavored car. Volkswagen, however, now seem intent on making their lineup more "American". This seems sure to alienate Volkswagen's core buyers in the US.

I am thinking about buying a refurbished iPhone 4 16 GB. I have 2 questions:
1. Has anyone experienced any problems with refurbished iPhones in the past?
2. How long is the warranty on refurbished iPhones?

I'd prefer a flip phone, but I don't think Apple could squeeze all the needed hardware into the design. Either that, or we'd have people start thread about how the fan noise drowns out the call and the phone burns their ear :p
If it's gonna be iChat mobile, then they're gonna have to do AV. That'll be their added value. you can get a music-playing phone from anywhere. But a mobile video phone? You have to go to Japan. And if people can just carry over their iChat/AIM accounts, it makes it that much easier.
I know they've got mobile wifi phones now, do they also have combo phones? Thought I saw one once... Anyway, if it's a normal cell untill you move into range of an open network and then automatically connects to iChat, heck, why not?
I'm still looking for the smartphone angle more than any other, though.
